Living with Rabid Kidults by Lisa Holt
A tongue in cheek insight into the challenges of living with adult disability in a multi-generational home. 7 adults, (6 neurodivergent), 3 generations, all over 20, in one house= chaos and hilarity unbounded.
Lisaba Holt lives with her husband and 4 grown daughters, all 6 have Autism, Anxiety/Depression and other health issues sprinkled in for good measure. She also lives with her husband’s mother-in-law (her mum) who is not autistic, and that’s the least of her problems. Lisaba has resorted to comedy to avoid the pain of dealing with her reality and to keep her violent impulses in check. Please send cash or pets.
001 Its done shut up
An introduction. Who? What? Where? Why? Who am I? Me obviously. Oh, you mean … mother, wife, daughter and autistic fruitcake. What am I talking about? Kidults: adult children living in my house driving me … well crazier. Where are we? None of your business, are you trying to dox me? Why do we live like this? Maybe we’ll all find out by listening to this podcast.
002 I Don’t Think it’s English
Manga, anime and foreign films: more ways for kidults to prove they are smarter than you while they simultaneously upset themselves, so they are more in need of care. These kids struggle with their first language. Why are they cultivating new ones? Warning: foreign films, culture etc…
003 Welcome to Constant Criticism
Living with Kidults means being subject to their judgement. Kidults are obviously expert at everything. After finding out that Mum can do nothing right, her plans to thwart the kidults are themselves thwarted. All she can do is long for the zombie apocalypse, then she’ll show them her skills are not so useless…
004 Just One Night Out
Kidults aren’t supposedly toddlers, and Grandma lives in the Granny Flat (not that she stays there) so surely Lisiba can go out for the night, especially if she takes Alex, Dafty Bat and Tab. Grandma, Cat and Tasha all claim to be independent, mature and capable of running the house alone. That’s the problem…. they might be able to run things alone, but they can’t run anything together.
005 No. Of Course I Don’t Hate Heffalumps
It’s not just the kidults, the hardest part of being disabled may just be dealing with Disability Services. True despair is being at the mercy of kidults and their entourages of therapy/support minions. It’s enough to make you forget what’s truly important: heffalumps and other soft toys…. soft toys don’t hurt you.
006 Kidults are No Help
A serious look at an overwhelming problem for the family. The merger of their NDIS provider has left them at the mercy of a new and hostile management. A temporary glitch that reveals a lot. Some things are too desperate for even Lisaba to joke her way out of.
