DADAA zine makers in Melbourne for celebration of all things zine
DADAA Lancelin staff and participants in our ongoing zine project, LDR, travelled to Melbourne for the annual Festival of the Photocopier, the largest zine fair in the southern hemisphere.
Organised by Sticky Institute, an artist run initiative dedicated to zines and zine culture, the fair took place at Kensington Town Hall on February 8 and 9, bringing together creators and zine lovers from across the country.
For DADAA participants Melissa Cook and Rebecca Redshaw it was not only their first visit to a zine fair but also their first trip to Melbourne! Accompanied by DADAA arts worker Beth Chrisp and Lancelin Client Services and Centre Coordinator Julie Grieves, the group explored hundreds of zines, met fellow artists, and gained fresh inspiration.
Melissa shared her excitement about making a new zine based on her travels: “I can’t wait to make a new zine all about my trip when I get home. I have kept all of my tickets and cards and I’m going to make the zine using them all.”
Julie Grieves reflected on the opportunity to attending the fair: “We have been in the zine world here for a few years now, creating and collaborating locally, so it was wonderful to attend the fair, meet amazing artists, showcase our zines, and see what others are making.”
The team also visited the Sticky Institute store, where they dropped off some of their zines to sell.
When asked about her favourite part of the festival, Rebecca Redshaw had the perfect answer: “My favourite thing about the Melbourne zine fair was all of it!”
The trip was made possible thanks to the support of Coastal Courier, Shire of Gingin, and Creative Australia.
