Journeys Within and Between presents a selection of paintings by Simon Marchment created over the past three and a half years. Featuring subjects ranging from Fremantle architecture and Australian landscapes to portraits and still life, the exhibition reflects Simon’s personal responses to both the natural and built environment.
Influenced by Surrealism, Fauvism, and Expressionism, Simon approaches colour in both an intentional and intuitive way. Working with a limited palette, he creates rich and harmonious colour relationships that bring balance, emotion, and energy to each work.
Simon works primarily with acrylic paint on canvas, alongside soft pastels, oil pastels, and ink on paper. His practice is loose, painterly, and experimental, combining a range of techniques to explore colour, texture, and mark-making. Through continuous practice and experimentation, he develops expressive compositions that reflect his varied interests, including Australian landscapes, found objects, the Beatles and other iconic musicians of the 60s and 70s.
Through this exhibition, Simon invites audiences to experience the emotional and visual impact of colour and to leave with a strong and positive impression of the works.
About the artist:
Simon has been interested in art since 1969, when he first began visiting galleries with his mother and reading art books. These early experiences sparked a lifelong interest in painting and visual art. He studied art during Years 11 and 12 and later trained at Claremont School of Art, while continuing to develop much of his practice through self-directed learning.
Since January 1999, Simon has been involved with DADAA, where he has worked and exhibited at both the Freight Gallery and Side Gallery in Fremantle. Over the years, he has developed a dedicated artistic practice and become a valued member of the DADAA community.
Simon’s work is inspired by a range of art movements, including Impressionism, Fauvism, Surrealism, and Expressionism, as well as his own life experiences and observations of the world around him. He works primarily with acrylic paint on canvas, as well as conte crayons and pastels on art paper. Through these materials, he explores colour, atmosphere, and expressive mark-making.
