Filmmaker callout

Are you an emerging filmmaker who is passionate about filmmaking and committed to celebrating diversity and inclusivity on screen? Have an idea for a short film?

DADAA is looking for five emerging WA filmmakers or filmmaking partnerships, with and without disability, to produce and deliver short films which showcase the stories of people with intellectual disability and/or neurodiversity. We are looking for creative and inclusive storytellers who can challenge stereotypes through authentic and empowering narratives.

Selected individuals or collaborative partnerships will receive $5000 to produce and deliver their short film, or to complete a current project that fits the criteria. Films must be run between 2 – 5 minutes and may be in any genre, including drama, documentary, music, comedy, animation or experimental.

This is the second year of DADAA’s In Frame, a short film project which aims to elevate the voices of people with intellectual disability and/or neurodiversity, fostering greater understanding and appreciation for their lived experiences.

Project overview

Films produced must profile or tell the stories of people with intellectual disability and/or neurodiversity. These short films may already be in a state of production with these funds used to complete the film.

You may apply if:

  • You are a filmmaker who identifies as having an intellectual disability and/or neurodiversity and you want to produce your own film.
  • You are a filmmaker with a proven history of disability-led, collaborative practice, and have an existing partnership with an individual who identifies as having an intellectual disability and/or neurodiversity.
  • You are a filmmaker with a proven history of disability-led, collaborative practice, and are interested in being partnered with a candidate from a pool of DADAA contacts to co-develop a story idea.
  • Availability: You will need to be available to attend monthly meetings with the DADAA Project Coordinator throughout the production process to discuss your project as it progresses.

How to apply

  • Introduction (250 words max): Tell us about yourself, your background, and why you’re interested in participating in this inclusive film project, as well as a short explanation of what ‘disability-led’ means to you.
  • Professional Background: Please provide us with a current CV and links to samples of short films you have already produced. This could include YouTube, Tiktok, or Instagram links.
  • Pitch (300 words max): Provide us with an outline of your proposed film, including a logline, genre, and short synopsis.
  • Budget: Provide us with an projected basic budget breakdown. Filmmakers will need to manage their own budget including crew costs, actors’ fees, equipment hire, and all production and post-production costs.

Assessment criteria

DADAA will assess individual applications against the following criteria: strength of story idea, skills and ability to successfully deliver your project. In the case of collaborative partnerships, you will also be assessed on the strength of your demonstrated understanding of inclusive and disability-led practice.
